One of the historic buildings in the R.M. of Whitemouth is a hundred year old barn along highway 44. It is situated on SW 15-12-11E. This was John Steiner's homestead when he came to Whitemouth in 1896 with his wife Rosina
The barn was built around 1907. In its day, it was considered a large barn, housing horses, cows, pigs, and chickens.
John's son Michael bought the barn in the early 20s and sold the farm to his nephew Walter Steiner after World War II through the Land Veteran's Land Act. Walter farmed with his wife Hannah and their four children until 1985.
William and Darlene Pluchinski (Walter's daughter), bought the land. The yard was subdivided and sold to the present owners.
You have to admire the hard work and ability of the early Steiner family who built this barn from local poles and lumber, and have it still standing with a straight roof line one hundred years later. |
