The RM of Whitemouth is true to its Manitoba roots - diversified geological beauty mixed with a friendly and courteous community spirit. From the Seven Sisters Hydro Dam, through the rolling hills to the various falls along the Whitemouth River, prairie grasslands blend with Canadian Shield and forest.
Sometimes called the "Gateway to the Whiteshell" The RM of Whitemouth is comfortably located one hour east of the City of Winnipeg and a half hour east of Beausejour, and 20 minutes west of the Whiteshell Provincial Park. Its this location that drew settlers from Europe in the 1800's to the Town of Whitemouth, as the railway building era began making the town into a staging and supply centre. One of the first families attracted was that of Dr. Charlotte Ross - Manitoba's first woman physician.
A book The Iron Rose, by Fred Edge, documents the extraordinary life of Charlotte Ross as she tended to railway and mill workers, native people and new settlers. Although qualified she was not legally allowed to practice medicine. She defied the so-called establishment and got on with her work, only to be legitimized posthumously in March of 1993. Her strength, will and dedication helped forge a heritage which is alive and well in Whitemouth.
After the railway era had quietened, farming such as dairy, grain, hog, and poultry became the mainstay of the region. There are currently three century old farms still in operation. The Wardrop, the Hendersons and the Klaprat-Alpers are a proud lineage indeed and a testament to the hard working people of the region.
